Students are expected to:
-
Wear required safety equipment
-
Follow all teacher instructions
-
Use tools only as instructed

Unsafe behavior or intentionally ignoring safety instructions may result in a student being removed from a shop activity and/or additional disciplinary consequences.
Everyone goes home safe every day.
4. Classroom Expectations
Students are expected to:
BE SAFE
Think before you act and follow safety procedures.
BE RESPECTFUL
Respect your classmates, teacher, tools, materials, and classroom.
BE RESPONSIBLE
Come prepared, complete your work, and take responsibility for your actions.
BE READY TO LEARN
Participate, ask questions, and be willing to try something new.
DO YOUR BEST
Your best work does not have to be perfect. What matters is your effort, improvement, and willingness to learn.
CLEAN UP
A construction project is not finished until the work area is clean and tools are properly returned.
5. Projects & Hands-On Learning
Students will participate in hands-on projects and activities throughout the school year.
Projects may include:
-
Tool identification activities
-
Measuring and construction math
-
Woodworking projects
-
Birdhouse construction
-
Bridge-building challenges
-
Design and building challenges
-
Team construction activities
-
Individual construction projects
Students will be evaluated on more than just the finished product. Safety, effort, craftsmanship, participation, following directions, and proper use of tools are all important parts of the learning process.
6. Grading
Grades may include:
Students are expected to complete assignments and projects by the assigned due date.
Late Work, Missing Assignments & Make-Up Work
If a student does not turn in an assignment by the due date, the assignment will be marked with an “M” (Missing) and a zero (0) will be entered until the assignment is turned in.
The zero indicates that the assignment has not yet been completed.
Students will have 2 school days after the original due date to turn in a late assignment:
Example
| Submission |
Maximum Grade |
| On time |
100 |
| 1 day late |
80 |
| 2 days late |
60 |
| 3+ days late |
0 |
Once the late-work window has passed, the assignment may no longer be accepted unless an exception has been discussed with the teacher.
7. Missing Work
If a student is missing an assignment:
M = Missing
A 0 will remain in the gradebook until the assignment is submitted.
Students are responsible for checking their missing work and completing assignments within the allowed time.
8. Make-Up Work Due to an Absence
When a student misses class, it is the student's responsibility to find out what was missed and complete the required work.
Students should check with the teacher and/or classroom resources after returning to class.
Work missed because of an excused absence or other circumstances will be handled according to school policy and the individual situation.
Because construction is a hands-on class, some activities may require students to make up work during an available class/work period or through an alternate assignment.
9. Communication Is Key
I understand that circumstances sometimes happen that may prevent a student from completing an assignment on time.
Communication between the student, parent, and teacher is extremely important.
Certain situations may require an exception to the normal late-work policy. These situations will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may require parent/guardian communication.
The goal of the late-work policy is not simply to take points away. It is to help students develop:
If there is a problem, please communicate. We can work together to find a solution that supports the student and their learning.
10. Technology
Technology may be used when it supports classroom instruction and student learning.
Students are expected to:
-
Use computers only for assigned activities
-
Follow teacher directions
-
Stay on appropriate websites and applications
-
Respect school technology
-
Keep personal devices put away unless permission is given
-
Use technology as a learning tool rather than a distraction
11. Tools & Materials
Students will be provided with the tools and materials necessary for classroom projects as available.
Students are responsible for using equipment properly and taking care of classroom materials.
Tools are a privilege that comes with responsibility.
Students who intentionally misuse tools or equipment may lose access to certain shop activities.
12. Attendance & Participation
Because Middle School Construction is a hands-on course, attendance and participation are extremely important.
Students who miss class may miss demonstrations, safety instruction, project work, or activities that cannot always be easily recreated.
Students should make every effort to:
13. Parent & Guardian Communication
Parents and guardians are an important part of student success.
Please encourage your student to:
-
Complete assignments on time
-
Ask questions when they need help
-
Take safety seriously
-
Be responsible for their work
-
Communicate when there is a problem
-
Take pride in what they build
If you have a question or concern, please reach out.
Communication is always better than letting a problem grow.
14. Our Goal
The goal of Middle School Construction is not simply to teach students how to build things.
Students will learn how to:
Plan.
Measure.
Build.
Problem-solve.
Work together.
Make mistakes.
Learn from them.
Improve.
Try again.
These are skills students can use far beyond the construction classroom.
